Flowerhorn Article

This article presents the flowerhorn cichlid as it relates to flowerhorns and numerous varieties belonging to this species affectionately known as Hua Luo Han. These large beauties are here to stay and have found a permenant place in the aquarium trade including an extensive line of flowerhorn cichlid pellets.
Essentially Hua Luo Han are large and very colorful cichlids thought to bring good luck. These fish are hybrids and are the result of crossing different cichlids. The primary core of this fish is the trimac or three-spot cichlid which is Cichlasoma trimaculatum and now referred to as Amphiliophus trimaculatus. This is a big and beautiful cichlid in its own right. There is much debate on the other cichlids used for the cross; some believe it was the red devil cichlid, severum cichlid, carpinitis cichlid, or festae cichlid. Perhaps multiple iterations of these mentioned cichlids.
It’s worth noting that flower horn fish represent Feng Shui in addition to good luck. Many recognize the large beautiful arowana fish in the 1980’s they were all the rage relative to the Feng Shui of fish. Hua Luo Han Flowerhorns have since been recognized as Feng Shui fish also since early 2000. So if you believe in good fortune, prosperity, wealth, love and happiness than buy a flowerhorn online today!

Flowerhorn Description

In particular flowerhorns are by far the most easily identifiable and popular tropical fish species available today. Typically they reach eight inches in length and have been seen at sizes of 12 inches or so. It’s not their size that makes the identifiable it’s their multitude of colors and those massive nuchal humps. Large cichlids like trimacs, midas cichlids and the redheaded cichlids are known to have large humps on their heads. Typically it’s only the male fish that sports this nuchal hump making it very easy to tell male from female. Relative to lifespan many cichlids live as long as ten years and some say longer has been recorded.
Additionally there multiple strains and color variations as well such as Super Red Dragon, Indo Malau, Red Fader, Kamfa, Blue Kamfa, Yellow Face, Kamfa Kamalau, Big Kok, Koky Thai Silk, Red Magma, King Thai Silk, King Mammon, and Blue Diamond flowerhorns respectively. There are a number of strains of flowerhorn fish for which a list can go on and on. There are actually flowerhorn cichlid posters available illustrating this fact.
There is a tremendous amount of breeding and trading of this species in Asia. Flowerhorn fish have truly become a global fascination with fish hobbyists developing this fish constantly in Malaysia, Thailand and Taiwan. Flowerhorn breeding programs are progressive and this has led to cichlid food manufucturers creating multiple lines of flowerhorn foods developed to excentuate color and in particular to develop large heads or nuchal humps

Flowerhorn Characteristics

So what is so unique about Flowerhorns anyway? These are large and extremely colorful fish with big personalities to boot. As any aquarist who fancies cichlids will learn keeping a large fish by itself will result in the animal be territorial and always showing off with spreading its fins and even attacking the glass or trying to bite their owners hand! These fish truly can be entertaining as well as a good luck piece or an aquatic Feng Shui if you will.
For the most part flower horn fish at their largest size can reach some 12 inches rumors are they can get bigger but this would require a large tank. Luo Han fish are also available with short bodies called short body flowerhorns which are more compressed. These types resemble parrot cichlids another popular hybrid cichlid recognizable from their distorted mouths and truncated bodies. That said the short body flowerhorn will not get as large as their peers due to their stunted frame which allows for smaller aquarium requirements. So there is something for everyone with flowerhorn cichlids. Males are predominately larger than females and sport their massive nuchal hump like the mane on a male lions head. Males also usually have brighter and more vivid colors than their counterparts.
What make flowerhorn fish so amazing are their gorgeous colors, finnage and aggressive behavior. These fish certainly are not shy and immediately approach the front of the aquarium to welcome you. They are very curious animals and love to beg for cichlid pellets. Luo Han cichlid fish are “egg layers” or substratum spawners and in typical fashion lay their eggs on a flat surface and both parents protect their fry very vigorously.

Flowerhorn History

The exact party and when flowerhorns were introduced is loosely held to the period of mid 1990’s and it is suggested that these cichlids were created in Malaysia. Some hobbyists think the dates are around 1996-1997 timeframe. Essentially this is a hybrid cichlid no different than blood parrot cichlids another popular hybrid cichlid but we do know is that flowerhorns arrived after the parrot cichlid craze. This fish quickly became admired by Malaysians for their pronounced heads or nuchal humps. In Malasia protruding heads relative to tropical fish are called Kaloi meaning warships and are admired. Similarly in Taiwanese society their admired for bringing luck in geomancy
It’s difficult to prove or give credit to one particular aquarist for this man made fish but it’s now part of the aquarium hobby at a global level. And it’s important to note that many cichlid hobbyists abhor this fish and other hybrid cichlids. Purists will be purists but there is a place for inline breeding efforts. For years aquarist have been crossing breeding to produce different colors perhaps not create new species but for coloration and finnage. Many people have produced beautiful angelfish cichlids, discus fish, guppies and other tropical fish from their efforts with inline breeding. However what separates the flowerhorn is it is a cross between two or perhaps more cichlids hence hybrid. Clearly they have become a main stay in the aquarium trade.

Flowerhorn Diet

Ok feeding flowerhorn cichlids is fairly simple because they are omnivorious and will eagerly accept all prepared aquarium foods on the market including live and frozen foods. Like any large Central or South American cichlids they can be feed cichlid pellets, freeze dried krill as well as frozen foods. These cichlids fall on the omnivorous side opposed to the large herbivorous cichlids. So think of them as like your keeping trimac cichlids or red devil cichlid fish. But the good news is that cichlid food manufacturers have made it easy by creating a line of flower cichlid foods or pellets. These are designed to promote health, color and to enhance the humps on their heads. You can offer them a broad base of cichlid pellets but also provide them food to enhance color and nuchal humps as well.
At any rate Luo Han fish will eat a host of things! As small cichlid fry offer them things that contain algae, beef heart, brine shrimp, insect larvae, and tubixfex worms and microworms. Don’t worry you can easily buy them cichlid flake food and as an alternative to the above mentioned live foods you can offer them freeze dried alternatives. Offering live bloodworms, brine shrimp are welcomed. Hatching brine shrimp at home seems to be the cost effective way to go. Keep in mind you can feed them these items as fry and when they are smaller sized cichlids. But as they grow and they will grow quickly they will require bulker foods like cichlid pellets, cichlid wafers and freeze dried kill. Foods that large carnivorous cichlids and tropical fish consume are appropriate too.

Flowerhorn Colors

Overall Luo Han fish are amazingly beautiful large freshwater cichlid fish.
And part of their attraction is that they come in so many stunning varieties which in turn are multitudes of colors. And no two flowerhorns are exact that’s what makes them special and unique.
Regarding the practice of Feng Shui as it relates to fish, red seems to be the predominant color. If you recall there was a period of time when everyone loved and wanted these gorgeous red arowana fish which were enormously expensive and not available in North America.
That said there is a connection with the color red and Feng Shui with flowerhorn cichlids. So it’s not uncommon to see red as the primary color especially found on the head and front parts of their body. There are other colors of course and these include blue, silver, yellow and orange. A subset of distant solid colors is found in the Thai silk flowerhorns.
Thai silk flowerhorns are beautifully colored with simplicity, their just one solid color. This is no surprise because other cichlids which sport this same color of blue have become so popular. You will see this color or very similar color in cichlids called Electric blue acara, Electric blue rams, Cobalt blue discus, Blue Blushing Angelfish
The most popular color for flowerhorn fishes is red. It is extremely popular among people who practice Feng Shui. Other popular colors include yellow, orange, blue, and silver, as in the case of Thai Silks.

Flowerhorn Finnage and color variations

One of the direct benefits of selective breeding is the fantastic creations of different color variations found in flowerhorns and even their body shapes. These vividly colored cichlids have created their own lane among tropical fish sales. When a tropical fish gains this kind of popularity and a line of food is created just for them they truly become a franchise.
